January 29, 2007: Low Stakes FU

Since the stakes were nearly inconsequential, I'll try to keep this entry short:

I played three $1(.10) Tournaments at TonyG tonight. I went 2-1.

Then, I went to a $.05/$.10 table and played 5 minutes of Hold 'em Poker against Khane9. I took half-a-buck from him. Here was our quick discussion before he left the table:

Ahhh . . . no matter the stakes, it's always fun to have an FU thrown at ya!

January 27, 2007: Found Money

Life isn't the same without online poker, is it? If nothing else, Steve's Gambling Sketchbook certainly isn't the same. Oh . . . the humanity!

I was surfing around on my laptop this morning and found a whopping $1.24 sitting in my TonyG poker account. So, I decided to waste a few minutes on TonyG's network to see how quickly I could squander away this newly discovered loot.

I jumped onto a 6-man $.05/$.10 Hold 'em Table and played for a few minutes. I won a few hands and left the table with $2.04. Woo hoo! I was almost up a buck!!

After my recent success at Heads-Up Tournaments (before Neteller died), I figured that 1-on-1 tourneys were my best chance to let this $2.04 work for me. So, for the 90 minutes, I played eight $1(.10) Heads-Up Tournaments against various opponents and I won every match. To put it mildly, the people playing these super-cheap tourneys on TonyG stink!

Every time I won a tournament, I claimed a profit of 90 cents. After 90 minutes, my $1.24 had grown to exactly $9.24. Just like that, I have a little money t0 play with!

The next time I log into TonyG's site, I think I'll join a $5(.50) Heads-Up Tourney. My new poker goal is to make my initial $1.24 grow into a working bankroll. That would be quite an accomplishment.

Wish me luck!

January 23, 2007: Da Bears

I won $5 this past weekend from Eric. We had both entered Bruce's postseason NFL pool, and Chicago's victory over New Orleans this past weekend guaranteed that I'd finish ahead of Eric. As a result, I won our sidebet, and Eric owes me another $5. Yay for me!! I'm not going to win any "regular" money in the pool but, at the least, I won back my entry fee. Thanks, Eric!

January 19, 2007: A Good Day

Today was a good day for the Sketchbook. This is probably the first time that I've been completely happy with my daily results - despite the fact that I lost money while gambling. Here's why:

Three days ago, I initiated a withdrawal of nearly $800 from my UltimateBet and Absolute Poker accounts into my Neteller account. Soon after the former executives of Neteller were arrested by the FBI, I figured that I'd better withdraw my money before things went haywire.

Not surprisingly, Neteller announced yesterday that it was ceasing to handle gambling transactions from U.S. customers. My withdrawal was initiated about 36 hours before this announcement:

"As of today ... at 12:01 AM GMT, U.S. resident customers were no longer able to transfer funds using Neteller's services to or from any online gambling site," the company said in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.

I immediately grew concerned about the status of my $800 withdrawal. So, I sent Neteller an email. Thankfully, Neteller quickly responded to my query and assured me that my $800 was safe and that my request for a withdrawal was being processed.

True to their word, the $800 appeared in my personal checking account today. Whew!!

After withdrawing the $800, I still left exactly $52 behind in my UltimateBet account. Unfortunately, it took me less than 15 minutes to lose that money on a Blackjack table. Ooops!

So, today's Sketchbook shows a daily loss of $52. However, I'm very happy to have the $800 in my bank account. Yay for me!

For the next couple weeks, I'm going to wait for the dust to clear and see what happens. Although Neteller is dead, there are other ways of getting money into online accounts. However, I'm not going to explore those avenues until I see how things shake out. After feeling the "angst" of having $800 in limbo, I'm not overly excited about risking any more money until I feel good about things.

January 17, 2007: I'm Glad I Withdrew my Money

NETELLER: No More InstaCash for U.S. Residents

Some poker sites have limited or completely restricted NETELLER transactions following the detainment of two former NETELLER executives by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Since the incident, NETELLER has banned the use of its InstaCash feature for U.S. residents, but continues to allow users to fund sites with money that already resides in their NETELLER accounts.

Poker sites had mixed responses to NETELLER’s move. PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, for instance, followed the NETELLER ban exactly and now prevent users from funding their accounts using InstaCash. Bodog, on the other hand, took a more drastic stance and disallowed players from using NETELLER at all, even with funds currently in their NETELLER accounts.

January 17, 2007: Neteller's Demise?

As readers of this blog know, I use Neteller to transfer funds amongst gambling websites. Without Neteller, I'd have no way of moving money around - and I'd have no way to transfer money to my personal checking account. I believe that most sites will actually write a check and mail it, but I'm hesitant to talk to someone in Gibraltor about having a check mailed to li'l Germantown, WI.

With that being said, I have just initiated a transfer of all my current online poker funds into my personal bank account. In other words, I won't be doing any online gambling for awhile after reading this article. I've already heard that several sites have stopped doing business with Neteller in the past 24 hours, and I don't want to "battle" to get my own money. For now, I'm going to "wait and see" what happens . . .

FBI Arrests Former NETELLER Executives

Two former NETELLER executives were detained while traveling separately through the United States on January 15th in “connection with the creation and operation of an Internet payment services company that facilitated the transfer of billions of dollars of illegal gambling proceeds from United States citizens to the owners of various Internet gambling companies located overseas,” according to the U.S. Attorney General’s office of Southern New York.

NETELLER suspended trading its shares on the London Stock Exchange in light of the detention of founding members Stephen Lawrence and John Lefebvre. Besides owning stock in NETELLER, the two do not hold any positions with the company.

NETELLER is an “e-Wallet” service that allows people to transfer money directly from their bank accounts to other parties. It’s the main service many online poker players and gamblers use to transfer money in and out of their preferred sites.

Here’s the complete release from the U.S. Attorney’s office:

Michael J. Garcia, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Mark J. Mershon, the Assistant Director in charge of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today that Stephen Eric Lawrence and John David Lefebvre were arrested yesterday in connection with the creation and operation of an Internet payment services company that facilitated the transfer of billions of dollars of illegal gambling proceeds from United States citizens to the owners of various Internet gambling companies located overseas.

NETELLER says it hasn’t received any kind of correspondence from the U.S. government concerning this situation, and although the subject line of this email (sent by a media representative of the AG’s office) says they were charged with money laundering, people are working on confirming the exact charges.

Lawrence and Lefebvre each own close to 6 percent of the company’s shares. Lawrence resigned as a non-executive director of the company in October; Lefebvre resigned from the same position in December of 2005.

Although Lefebvre and Lawrence do not and never have owned an online gambling site, they join a small club of men who have been arrested and charged by the Federal Government for violating various laws concerning online gambling, particularly money laundering.

Executives with online gambling companies Sportingbet and BetOnSports were arrested and charged with taking bets over the Internet (among other charges) in 2006, but this is the first time people affiliated with an “e-Wallet” have been targeted.

In October, President George W. Bush signed into law the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which is designed to curb online gambling by targeting banks that cooperate with online sites. The Treasury Department is still working out the details on how to enforce this law, and has until summer to do so.

NETELLER is based in the Isle of Man, and neither Lawrence nor Lefebvre is a U.S. citizen.

January 16, 2007: Blackjack & Heads-Up Poker

When I got home from work this evening, Theresa was busy making dinner. The food wasn't quite ready, so I sat down on the living room sofa and played UltimateBet blackjack for 20 minutes. I didn't catch great cards, but they were good enough to win exactly $20.75. I think I caught five blackjacks during my abbreviated session, but I surrendered A LOT of hands at the same time. As a result, my profits were relatively modest.
After eating, I jumped on Absolute Poker and played 4 Heads-Up Hold 'em Tournaments. Each tournament cost $10.50 to play. Here were the Avators of my four opponents:

Similar to the other day, I finally found someone with a personalized Avator when playing my 4th match. Unfortunately (for Schmidty4), his fate was the same as my first three opponents. He lost!! It was especially gratifying to beat someone showing a Bears logo!

So, once again, I went 4-0 playing Heads-Up Tournaments on Absolute Poker. As a result, I won another $38. My opponents must be intimidated by my Marquette Warrior Avator!

Coupled with my blackjack winnings, I enjoyed another respectable evening of gambling. Knock on wood, but I'm beginning to accumulate a respectable online bankroll.

January 15, 2007: Good Television

There was some good TV viewing in Milwaukee tonight. In fact, it was so good that I didn't have an opportunity to do much gambling.

First, I watched Marquette defeat Louisville on ESPN. Suddenly, the Warriors are looking like a legitimate basketball team - and that's a very good thing! After watching them lose their first two Big East games, I was very concerned. However, a 3-game winning streak has renewed my hopes that this will be a good season for my alma mater.

Quite naturally, I couldn't gamble while watching this key conference tussle.

When the basketball game ended, I wandered to Fox Sports North and found that they were replaying Juan Nieves' 1987 no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles - as announced my Jim Paschke and Mike Hegan. I fondly recall watching this baseball game in the basement of my home when I was 16 years old, and I couldn't turn the channel when I found this Brewers' classic on the tube. This is the first "classic" game that I've found worth viewing.

Again, I couldn't gamble while watching this memorable game.

On to the gambling . . .

After watching Robin Yount make a diving catch in centerfield to save the no-hitter, I joined an UltimateBet blackjack table for about 15 minutes. I won $20 and decided that was enough. A Marquette win, a Brewers' no-hitter, and a quick $20 was enough to make it a very satisfying evening at the ol' abode.

January 14, 2007: Absolute Avators

For anyone who cares, I've posted a picture of my Absolute Poker Avator below. Absolute allows you to download any image you like, and it's quite interesting to see what other people select. My Avator is a bit predictable, especially when you consider the logo I routinely display in the upper right hand corner of this Sketchbook.

Venturing away from UltimateBet's blackjack tables, I decided to play $10(.50) Heads-up Tournaments on Absolute Poker this morning. Here's a quick snapshot of the respective Avators of my four opponents:

As you can see, only one of my opponents (Chil) had downloaded a personalized Avator. Otherwise, I was left staring at default Avators while playing these Heads-up Tournaments. That's a bit unexciting.

Thankfully, I had a good morning session of poker. In fact, I beat all four of my opponents. As it turned out, Chil was my toughest match. He played rather well and it took quite awhile to claim all his chips. After beating him, I was relieved to be 4-0 and decided to retire with a tidy profit of $38 in a little over an hour.

Later in the afternoon, WannaTalkPoker hosted a $100 Guaranteed Tournament on DV8 Poker. It cost $5.50 to enter, and only ten people joined the tournament. With an overlay of $45, it was an easy decision for me to play. First place was to win $50. Second place would claim $30, and third place would get $20.

I'm very glad I decided to play, 'cuz I proceeded to win the tournament. More than once, I got very lucky. However, I thought I played pretty well and felt that I rightfully earned the top prize. It took nearly 2 hours to play, but I prevailed and, as a result, I experienced a profit of exactly $44.50 this afternoon.

Adding in my morning's profits, I had a pretty good day. My gambling endeavors are going rather well right now.

January 13, 2007: That's what I'm talking about!

I finally had a good and stressfree session of Blackjack today. I won my first three hands and never looked back. In fact, I was never down. That is very unusual!

After the dust had settled, I had claimed a profit of exactly $101 while watching television and seeing Marquette defeat West Virginia at the Bradley Center. I played blackjack for nearly 90 minutes, so I can't say that it was a quick score. However, I steadily saw my stack increase throughout the basketball game, and I was plenty happy to log out of UltimateBet's software with a nice profit. Between my win and the Warriors' win, it was a good day!

For whatever reason, I can't seem to win a lot of my double-downs, but I'm winning a lot of other hands. Additionally, I'm surrendering my cards a lot (and losing half my bet), but that strategy has worked during my last two sessions.

I hope this short streak of luck continues.

January 12, 2007: Tom's $100 Pool

I received a faxed copy of the final standings of Tom's $100 Point Spread Pool this morning. Picking college and pro games against the spread this past football season, I finished with a respectable record of 55-44-1. That was good enough for 3rd place, which netted me a prize of $150.

A dozen people joined this competition. The winner of the pool ($600) took home a nice payday. I finished 1/2 game behind 2nd place. Doh!

The next three spots were nipping at my heels, so I suppose I should be happy with the $150 I claimed for 3rd place. It's the first time - in four tries - that I've actually finished in the money in this annual pool. It definitely didn't hurt to start the season 12-1. After that hot start, I went 50% the rest of the year.

Some of you will recognize a few names on the list. Here were the final results:

1. Ron (58-41-1) - $600
2. Tom (56-44) - $350
3. Steve (55-44-1) - $150
4. Tono (53-44-3) - $100
5. Brian (53-45-2)
6. Eric (54-46)
7. John (51-44-5)
8. Bruce (51-47-2)
9. Randy (49-50-1)

January 11, 2007: I'm not Insane!

I finally found some luck on UltimateBet's blackjack tables tonight. In fact, it only took 25 minutes, but I won back the $72.25 I lost during my last two sessions. If nothing else, I guess I can say that I'm not going insane. I finally played blackjack and won. Woo hoo!!

I actually won $74 during my 25 minute session this evening. I was tempted to continue playing, but I was happy to win my money back. I would have been a bit depressed if I had kept playing and lost it all back.

For now, I'm content being "Even Steven." The next time I log into an online network, I'll start chasing the modest losses I'm showing so far this month.

January 9, 2007: Going Insane?

Someone once said that the definition of insanity is repeating the same act over and over while expecting different results. I couldn't help but recall this saying while sitting at UltimateBet's blackjack tables tonight.

I lost exactly $41.50 at UltimateBet's tables while watching television and seeing the Badgers beat up on Ohio State. I must've played for two hours - which means a lot of money was wagered. My biggest bet was $15. My smallest bet was $1. If nothing else, the hands go MIGHTY quickly when you're playing 1-on-1 against the dealer.

Coupled with the $30 I lost last night, I've given away over $70 the past two nights. Ugh! I was down over $100 at one point tonight, so I can't say that I'm crying in my beer about losing $41.50 this evening. It could have been much worse.

These Blackjack tables are mighty frustrating. Every once in a while, I go on a nice run and win six or seven consecutive hands. Then, the dealer comes back and wins six or seven hands right back at me. Unfortunately, I always seem to bet more during the bad runs.

Before I reach the point of clinical insanity, I may stop playing blackjack. On the other hand, I'm due to experience a winning session, aren't I?

January 8, 2007: UltimateBet Blackjack

During the 45 hours immediately preceding tonight's college football championship game between Ohio State and Florida, I decided to play some Blackjack on UltimateBet.

Unfortunately, I couldn't seem to ever get ahead. I lost $20 rather quickly, and I never got back to even. Betting anywhere from $2 to $6 a hand, I ended up losing exactly $30.75 during tonight's abbreviated session. I didn't have a good feeling that the UltimateBet dealer was going to let me leave the table with a profit, so I decided to quit before I lost too much money.

January 6, 2007: Bucks vs. Cavaliers

Last evening, Chris and I visited the Bradley Center to personally witness the Bucks lose to the Cavaliers. Despite the fact that Milwaukee led comfortably for most of the game, they fell apart at the finish line. It was an ugly final 6 minutes!

Along the way, I lost $8 to Chris. I took LaBron James. He took Michael Redd. The player with the most points at the end of each quarter was the winner. Unfortunately, Mr. James only scored 8 points, and I lost all four quarters to Chris. Mr. Redd scored 25 points. As such, I owe Chris $8.

January 5, 2007: NFL Postseason Pool

I joined Bruce's $5 postseason NFL pool this afternoon. Ranking each team from 12 to 1, you accumulate points every time an NFL playoff game is played. The person accumulating the most points during the postseason wins a healthy pile of cash. Per usual, I've got a $5 side bet going with Dead Crow, so I gotta beat him to win my money back.

Here are my picks. I'm predicting that the Eagles will beat San Diego in the Super Bowl. If that happens and the Chiefs beat Indy this weekend, I should have no problem winning some loot. Larry Johnson may run for 300 yards on Saturday.

12 -> Eagles
11 -> Chargers
10 -> Patriots

January 4, 2007: College Bowl Pool Update

The college football bowl season is wrapping up. With only three bowl games remaining, my chances of claiming any cash in David's pool are gone. Last I checked, I was in 9th place - which isn't too bad when you consider that 83 people are in the pool. Still, I was near the top of the leaderboard until Monday's games. Unfortunately, Arkansas' victory over the Badgers hurt, and Michigan's loss to USC hurt even more. Oh, well.

The best 5 finishers in David's pool will claim money, and the best I can finish is 6th. Drat!

Regardless, I am guaranteed to beat "Dead Crow" - so I did win my $10 entry fee back. Thanks, Dead Crow!! I think he's 3 games behind me with no chance of overtaking me.

January 3, 2007: A Dull Thud

The New Year didn't hasn't started off with a bang. To be honest, my gambling in 2007 has started off with a dull thud.

I've logged 10 hours of poker during the past couple days, and I haven't found a great deal of success. I've concentrated my play at UltimateBet's 6-man $3/$6 tables, and I've lost a bit of money. In fact, I'm down exactly $107.30 so far this year.

At one point, I was down $200, so I feel a bit fortunate to get back to "only" down $107.30. Considering the fact that I've already played 10 hours of online poker this year, I guess that $107.30 isn't terrible. It would be nice to be winning, however.

My biggest problem has been the 4-card flush draw. I am not hitting the 5th card when I flop 4-to-a-flush, and it's hurting me so far in 2007.
